China holds the largest resources of W and Sn in terms of production and reserves, and their reserves have accounted for ca. The Nanling region is famous for its large-scale and multi-stage magmatism and abundant W, Sn and other rare-metal resources and reserves [ 2 , 3 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. Previous studies have revealed the presence of many large W-Sn polymetallic deposits in this region, such as Shizhuyuan, Dajishan, Xianghualing, Xihuashan, and Xitian Figure 1 ; [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. Furthermore, they are closely related to the Mesozoic granitic intrusions, on both temporal and spatial scales [ 12 , 23 , 26 , 27 , 28 ].

A variety of analytical instruments have also now been developed using different micro-sampling techniques coupled with mass spectrometers, thus enabling wide usage of U-Pb radioisotope dating. However, problems remain in the interpretation of the measured Pb isotopic ratios to transform them into ages. Among them is the presence of non-radiogenic Pb of unknown composition, often referred to as common or initial Pb.

Events Methods in high-precision geochronology U-Pb isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry ID-TIMS geochronology is often coined the “gold-standard” in geochronology. This is because 1 the decay constants of U are better known than any other long-lived parent nuclide, 2 the dual decay of U and U allow the evaluation of closed-system behavior, 3 because the standard, or tracer, against which ages are calculated can be calibrated with high precision and accuracy, and 4 because the mass spectrometry can be carried out with a high degree of precision and accuracy.

Despite these benefits, there are significant improvements being made to both the U-Pb ID-TIMS method and its intercalibration with other dating methods. State of the art conventional ID-TIMS Isotope Dilution and Thermo-Ionisation Mass Spectrometry dating applied to global zircon and monazite populations can result in scattered analytical points producing inaccurate intercept ages. Consequently, precise dating of a complex sample should be guided by a prior textural analysis so as to fully appreciate the significance of each zircon or monazite generation and corresponding ages.

In this article, we propose a new technique which combines textural analysis and ID-TIMS dating on single monazite crystals. This method operates on thin sections with three successive steps comprising 1 a complete characterisation of textural relationships using EMP Electron Micro-Probe , 2 the extraction by micro-drilling of selected individual monazite crystals and 3 the conventional U-Pb dating of each individual extracted grain by ID-TIMS.

These results are compared with those obtained by conventional dating on zircon and monazite global populations from three other samples. The “in situ” U-Pb dating approach allows to distinguish four distinct events on a single thin section. The UHT metamorphism was dated at 2. The first integrated use of in situ U—Pb geochronology and geochemical analyses to determine long-distance transport of glacial erratics from mainland Canada into the western Arctic Archipelago ABSTRACT Glacial erratics collected on Melville Island, western Canadian Arctic Archipelago, were analyzed to determine their mainland provenance, thereby constraining their long-distance transport by the Laurentide Ice Sheet.

An east-west ice divide in this region is consistent with previously reported ice-flow indicators that document northward flow from the mainland and recent thermomechanically coupled ice-sheet numerical modeling that indicates former maximum ice thickness on the mainland immediately south of Melville Island.

Petrological and geochemical features indicate that these mantle-derived composite xenoliths were formed by silicic melt—lherzolite interaction. Their igneous-type REE patterns and metamorphic zircon type CL images indicate that they were not crystallized during melt—peridotite interaction and subsequent high-pressure metamorphism. These observations suggest that the Precambrian zircons were xenocrysts that survived melting of recycled continental crustal rocks and were then injected with silicate melt into the host peridotite.

These observations suggest that melt—peridotite interactions at 80— Ma were induced by partial melting of recycled continental crust. These features imply that the melt—peridotite interactions at 48—64 Ma could be associated with a depleted mantle-derived carbonate melt or fluid.

A better understanding of how zircon ages vary with time requires sophisticated statistical analysis of U/Pb isotopic ages from both bedrock and detrital zircon databases.
